Bunker Surveys
The bunker survey is required in order to calculate the exact amount of bunkers on board at the time of vessel’s delivery/redelivery.
During the On-Hire phase, when the vessel is handed over by the owner to the charterer, the Master typically issues a Delivery Certificate. This document specifies the location, time, involved parties, and the total amount of bunkers on board at that moment.
Conversely, in the Off-Hire scenario, the charterer returns the vessel to the owner, and a "Redelivery Certificate" is issued at the conclusion of the chartering period.
Surveyors play a crucial role in this process. They conduct soundings of all bunker tanks, making corrections to the vessel's trim and heel to accurately determine the volume in the tanks. Corrections are then applied for temperatures and specific gravity to ascertain the precise quantity of bunkers on board at the survey's time and location. The Surveyor also cross-checks the vessel's consumption, referencing the engine log book and chartering details, to establish the remaining amount of bunkers on board during the Delivery or Redelivery process.
